Career Aspirations for my Community Development:
When it comes to specific “driving” interest within community
development I would have to say that would have to be the inclusiveness of all
individuals within the particular community, no discrimination of any sort, I
would hope to influence my local community that I currently reside in because that’s
a first-hand experience that I’m able to relate to currently. I’m a generic
white male living in Kalihi Valley, Honolulu, Hawaii which is dominantly
Filipinos but also, I’m married into a Native Hawaiian family, so to be able to
assist the community with addressing inclusiveness outside of their normal
demographic I feel would be greatly appreciative.
I would see myself as more of a consultant of sorts when it comes to be a
local community development practitioner, giving non-local guidance for
addressing individuals outside of the comfort group, being that intermediate
verbal communication to the outside environment that they don’t normally interact
with. Being that I’ve traveled to many different locations globally has helped
me enlarge my cultural perspective when speaking to individuals that have
differentiating backgrounds than my own.
As I stated earlier, I’m married into a Native Hawaiian family and am fully
immersed into the cultural lifestyle that encompasses, My eldest son attended a
local immersion school learning Native language and protocols, we volunteer for
cultural practices most weekends and most require certain religious activities
that are far from my wheel house as I’m a stout Atheist, but seeing how this
lifestyle will impact my sons helps me address any issues I personally have
with that.
I just hope by giving this particular community a differing voice of opinion
when it comes to community development enhancing their ability to receive
education outside their normal spectrum, will be able to use my ability of humor to break the barrier of contention in race.
